about us

1

our philosophy
It is our belief that suffering is an inescapable part of life and that while we all face life challenges, our experiences of pain and suffering are unique to each. Our role as therapists is to provide a confidential space where trust will grow. As this occurs, we work together to explore your concerns in a way that will deepen your insight and wisdom in your search for solutions, personal growth, health and well-being. Having lived in several different countries, we have an appreciation and respect for cultural differences, values and beliefs. This experience has also given us an abiding sense of our common humanity. Serenity Counselling reflects our belief that considering the whole person is essential to personal growth and the healing process.

The Aims of CounsellingOften we can work through problems and life crises adequately without professional help. At times, however, counselling, referred to as talk therapy, can be of great benefit and the skills of a trained therapist can help bring about a sense of hope and relief while you navigate through a time of difficulty/crisis. In each case, we work creatively with you and select therapeutic interventions that are most likely to help you gain the tools and strategies necessary to: (a) manage your painful emotions, (b) clarify your thoughts, and (c) enable you to make your own decisions, problem solve and achieve your goals. Pro-Bono Counselling At Serenity Counselling, we believe that mental wellness is a human right and not a class privilege, and that it should be accessible to those who need it regardless of their financial situation. As such, we are able to meet the needs of low-income individuals and families by offering pro-bono counselling. However, as our pro-bono counselling and psychotherapy services are in high demand, we are only able to serve clients whose per capita household income (PCHI) is < $800 per month. This threshold has been chosen as it aligns with the Ministry of Social and Family Development's benchmark for ComCare assistance. This PCHI threshold ensures that our services remain within the reach of the those who will otherwise find private counselling and psychotherapy services impossible to access.
